Item Details

Charcoal on paper

A charcoal drawing of a family at the butcher by the listed Swiss-American artist Herman Roderick Volz (1904-1990). This drawing on paper depicts an intricately detailed interior scene of a butcher showing a family a cut of mean in his shop. This work is signed to the lower right corner of the picture plane. It is presented in a wooden frame, under glass, with a wire hanger to the verso. Known for his genre scenes and modernist landscapes, Volz was born in Switzerland and studied art at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna and at the Art und Gewerbeschule in Zurich. During the 1930s, Volz moved to San Francisco, where he painted a mural on the facade of the Federal Building on Treasure Island. He later went on to work as a technical director and scene painter in Hollywood.
