A large handwoven Indian area rug. This gorgeous wool rug is chain-stitched in a palette of rose, apricot, garnet, cream, powder blue and ochre with prominent teal highlights. It begins with a large, irregularly shaped medallion grounded in rose and filled with stylized palmettes, lancet leaves and geometric vinework. The medallion rests on an apricot lozenge, also irregular in outline, the lozenge resting on a cream-colored outer field populated with abstracted vases and foliate elements. Framing the field are compound borders, including a stylized herati main border featuring abstracted palmettes over rose. Minor borders include floral and running water patterns over ochre, rose and powder blue. Selvedges are serged, the rug finishing at each end with tan cotton warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
