Rare Hand-Knotted Turkmen Tekke Khalyk (Camel Tack)
Item Details
An exceptional hand-knotted wool Turkmen Tekke khalyk, which was used as a breast decoration for the camel carrying the bride in a bridal procession. Other sources indicate this shape was used as a door surround for a tent. It is well made in a thick wool in a palette of ruby, scarlet, and crimson yarns with black and ivory. It features curled leaf and double cross patterns with a ram’s horn element in the exterior borders. The interior negative space has been carefully macramé woven into a chain-style texture and is light and delicate. The exterior edges and ends have twisted warp yarns finished with wide tassels, having to very long tassel elements at the top end. It is not labeled.
