Wallace Nutting Hand-Colored Photograph "A Romance of the Revolution"

Item Details

A hand-colored photograph on paper titled A Romance of the Revolution by photographer Wallace Nutting (American; 1861–1941). It depicts an 18th-century woman seated in a parlor and reading while fanning herself with a hand fan. The work is signed in the photo to the lower left and dated 1916, as well as signed by hand to the lower right and titled to the lower left. It is presented behind a mat and glass in a wood frame.

Primarily based in New England, Wallace Nutting turned to photography after his poor health forced him to retire from his work as a Congregational minister. He is mostly known for his platinotypes of New England landscapes, architecture, and residential interiors referred to as “Colonials”, which featured women posed in traditional 18th-century feminine roles. In 1904, he founded the Wallace Nutting Art Prints Studio, affectionately nicknamed “Nuttinghame”, and employed nearly 200 colorists, often women, who hand-painted and tinted his photographs, as may have been the case for this particular work.
