A hand-knotted Persian Baluch area rug. This wool rug features a densely patterned flower-and-bird design in a palette of cream, emerald, vermillion, camel, crimson, scarlet and black. it begins with two large medallions grounded in cream and filled with palmettes, flowers and foliates. The medallions rest on a black field that just barely peeks through a riot of lancet leaves and blossoms, which are interrupted only to make room for the images of eight cranes with wings spread over a cream background, the birds rendered in camel with scarlet outlining. Framing the field are compound, unresolved borders, including herati patterns over black and red, repeating stars over red, chevrons and barber-pole patterns. Selvedges are double overcast in aubergine and apricot, the rug finishing at each end with short ivory warp fringe made of goat hair. A label on the reverse reads ‘Prov.: Belutch’ and ‘Iran.’
