C. 1913 Carved Salem Limestone Cigarette and Match Holder

Item Details

An antique limestone cigarette and match holder from Bedford, Indiana. This piece is carved with two reservoirs in the likeness of tree trunks, accented with detailed bark and a foliate vine. A banner wraps around the front of the piece, inscribed: ‘June 3 1913 Bedford Ind, Glen.’ Bedford limestone, also known as salem limestone, has been utilized in structures including the Empire State Building, the Biltmore Estate, and more, earning the town the nickname: ‘limestone capital of the world.’
