Hand-Knotted Karabagh Chelaberd Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Karabagh Chelaberd area rug. This southern Caucasian wool rug features a classic Chelaberd triple-medallion design in a palette of garnet, cream, emerald and mocha. It begins with three vertically arranged cruciform medallions with dramatic extensions outlined in ivory. The medallions rest on a garnet field amid stars and geometric florets. Framing the field are six borders, including a crab-pattern primary border featuring eight-pointed stars over cream and a minor border featuring a laleh abbasi picket pattern in emerald and garnet. An inscription in non-Western lettering is woven into a small cartouche at the lower end of the rug. Selvedges are double overcast. Ends finish with mesh skirts and knotted warp fringe made of ivory goat hair. A label on the reverse is written in German.
