1633 London Publication of "Divine Poems" by Francis Quarles

Item Details

A half bound leather book with marbled boards and end papers titled Divine Poems by Fra: Qvarles (Francis Quarles, English, 1592-1644), published in 1633 by M.F. for I. Marriot, London. The book contains the history of Jonah, Ester, Job and Sampson as well as sonets and elegies. An interesting hand written notation on the fly page refers to a worm hole in the book and reads ‘The Literate book worm! ’The Feast of Worms’ A small worm hole next to page number, progressively grows larger, thaen smaller and when the worm had digested the poem – he died at the end on page 58! The hole is worth more than the subject’. The worm hole is seen at the beginning of the poem and ironically disappears at the end page of the poem.
