Circa 1726 "A Playne and Godly Exposytion or Declaration of the Commune Crede"

Item Details

A circa 1726 copy of A Playne and Godly Exposytion or Declaration of the Commune Crede by Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536). The colophon notes that it was ‘Imprinted at London in Flete-strete: by me Robert Redman, dwellynge at the sygne of the George, next to Saynt Dunstones churche’ (Z2r) and the date 1533 taken from the end of the dedication (A2v). However, this is actually an early 18th century reprint of the original 1533 work, identifiable from the Roman type (rather than Gothic) and leaf 178 being misprinted as 187 (ESTC T138059, ESTC S101698). Additionally, the signatures in this copy has signatures of 8, followed by a 23rd signature ‘Z’ with two leaves. The 1533 edition is noted as having the 22nd signature ‘Y’, with 10 leaves. (See full collational formula below). The exact date of publication is unknown but is estimated by the English Short Title Catalogue to be sometime between 1726 and 1736. An early hand has notated the incorrect 1533 date in several locations throughout the book including the title page and colophon. The work has been finely rebound in calf with a blind tooled spine and cover panels with raised bands and a gilt red leather spine label. The spine also has the incorrect 1533 date gilt on the lower spine.
