Jan Jansson 17th-Century Hand-Colored Map Engraving of North American East Coast

Item Details

A mid 17th century hand-colored map engraving of the North American east coast, fully titled Nova Anglia Novum Belgium et Virginia by Dutch cartographer and publisher Jan Jansson (1588-1664). Spanning from the Carolinas northward to Nova Scotia, this map is presented under glass with off-white matting, and housed in a wood frame with a medium brown finish.

Son-in-law of renowned cartographer Jocodus Hondius, Jan Jansson produced his first maps in 1616, depicting France and Italy. He was especially notable for reissuing the Mercator-Hondius atlas with the help of his brother-in-law Henricus Hondius. The atlas was significantly enlarged with Jansson’s additions and eventually renamed Atlas Novus. By 1660, it had been expanded into eleven volumes and was referred to as Atlas Major, including works by nearly 100 engravers and authors.
