An ink illustration on illustration board for the story The Best Man in Buffalo Gap published in Street & Smith’s WWild West Weekly in 1940 by well-listed artist Lorence F. Bjorklund (American; 1911-1978). Depicted is a scene in which a gunman crouches behind a barrel, at the ready with his gun drawn. The work is initialed to the lower left within the imagery and has an informational inscription and caption to the lower right, as well as a stamp to the verso reading “L. F. Bjorklund, Croton Falls N. Y” and the inscribed story title. The piece is presented unframed in a protective acetate sleeve.

Born in Minnesota, Bjorklund was known for his Western genre scenes. Bjorklund earned his first education in art as an apprentice to a mural painter and drawing lessons from his father. In 1927, he received a scholarship to study art at the Pratt Institute. During this time, he illustrated Western genre pulp publications. Throughout his career, his illustrations were published in over 300 books, including some that Bjorklund authored. He is listed in the 1975 book Fifty Great Western Illustrators by Jeff Dykes.

- discoloration throughout board, concentrated towards edges and upper portion on both recto and verso; areas of white correction to drawing;
