Antique Meriden Britannia Company Silver Plate Roll-Top Butter Dish

Item Details

An antique silver plate butter dish by the Meriden Britannia Company. The butter dish features a somewhat spherical roll-top, engraved with the initials ‘A.E.’, with embossed patterning and a raised cameo accent. It has pierced meandering trim, cut-out quatrefoil patterning to its underside, and stands on an oblong pedestal base. It has a removable butter dish insert engraved, ‘Presented to A. Ewens By The Mail Carriers of Md. Oct. 15th 1867’. The underside of the dish is additionally marked, ‘Meriden Brit’a Company 83’.

Condition

- some surface scratches and moderate tarnishing; one chain is not attached; its lid is loose.
