WWII Era Photographic Print of the USS Bunker Hill

Item Details

A WWII era photographic print of the USS Bunker Hill. The USS Bunker Hill was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during WWII for the US Navy. The ship was commissioned in May 1943 and participated in the Pacific Theater Operations, where it was hit in rapid succession by two Japanese kamikaze planes, which resulted in casualties exceeding 600, the second heaviest loss suffered by any carrier. After WWII the ship was used to bring American service members home, but was never recommissioned and efforts to save the ship as a museum ship were thwarted. The print is displayed under glass in a cream mat and narrow wood frame, wired to the verso for wall attachment.
