A mixed media illustration on paperboard by artist, illustrator, and veteran Edward Vebell (1921-2018). The illustration is comprised of ink, wash, gouache accents, and applied photo fragments. As explained in an inscription by the artist to the lower center, this work features General de Gaulle inspecting astronaut Gordon Cooper’s Mercury capsule at the Paris International Air Show of 1963. The work is signed to the lower center. It is presented in gray painted wood frame lined with canvas.

Edward Vebell was an artist, veteran, and fencer who competed in the Summer Olympics of 1952. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and was commissioned by the U.S. Postal Service and various publications such as Stars & Stripes magazine and Readers Digest. Vebell was also the official courtroom artist for the Nuremberg Trials. His work has been represented by the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.; the Norman Rockwell Museum; and the Westport Historical Society, among other institutions.

Condition

- small nicks scattered throughout surface of illustration; faint spots of accretion scattered throughout illustration; wear in frame includes stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout; fraying throughout canvas lining on frame.
