Louise Dunn Yochim Mid-Century Woodcut Print "Belmont Harbor"

Item Details

A mid-century woodcut print on paper titled Belmont Harbor by listed artist Louise Dunn Yochim (Ukrainian/American, 1909 – 2003). The piece depicts Chicago’s Belmont Harbor, with historic buildings lining the waterfront and small boats gathered in a harbor to the foreground, rendered in black ink against a cream ground. Light illuminates a vast dark sky that looms overhead, reflected in the waters below. The work is signed by hand to the lower right and titled to the lower left. It is set over a cream paper backing and presented under glass in a black wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso.

Illinois painter and printmaker Louise Dunn Yochim was born in the Ukraine in 1909, and began her art career in earnest in the 1930s after settling in Chicago. Funded by the WPA in her early years, her body of work ranged in style from Modernism to Abstract Expressionism. She was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists and won numerous awards throughout her career. Her work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Butler Institute of American Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among many others. She also taught extensively throughout her time working in the Midwest, including at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the Junior School AIC, as well as a two-decade role as the Supervisor of Art for Chicago Public Schools from 1950-71.
