Master architect and designer, Achille Castiglioni was one of the major players during the Italian design renaissance. His designs are a juxtaposition of playful style and functionality. Castiglioni studied at the Polytechnic Institute of Milan and worked for his brothers in their design studio after graduating in 1944. The three brothers created many innovative objects including Mezzadro, a stool topped with a tractor seat, the Arco lamp, and a ball-shaped shade attached to a steel arch. Much of Castiglioni’s work was inspired by his interactions with everyday items such as lampposts or car headlights. In addition to having his work exhibited at the MoMA in New York, Castiglioni was also a nine-time award winner of the Golden Compass award in industrial design.
