Antique Japanese Meiji Period Hand-Embroidered Screen
Item Details
An antique Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) framed silk paneled screen. Two black lacquered wood screens are joined together with woven lacings, and it rests on bracket feet. Both screens hold gold colored silk panels embellished with very fine, hand-embroidered scenes depicting maple trees, a ginkgo tree, peonies, grasses, and a white rooster and hen, and are rendered in soft colored silken threads. The fabric panels are bordered with gold colored hand-woven, geometric-patterned silk. No maker’s mark or signature.

- wood has surface marks, scratches retouched areas; silk panels are in delicate condition, including wear, fraying, stray threads, discoloration, and lower left panel has a large tear; some of the frame lacing is worn or missing
