Vintage Chinese Embroidered Wall Hanging

Item Details

A vintage, hand-embroidered Chinese wall hanging. This detailed piece is stitched on a scarlet silk ground panel and depicts an elderly man in traditional dress with a long white beard standing upon the back of a four-toed dragon while holding a Chinese Fish Drum and bamboo sticks, often a symbol of Daoist immortal Zhan Guolao (張果老). It features satin stitching with padded details in the man’s face, decorative star and lattice stitches, with outlines and fills in the sleeves on the figure’s robe in couched copper tone and gold tone metal-wrapped threads. There is text stitched to the upper center reading ‘Devoted and Loyal Servant of God’ (主之忠僕). It is finished with a cotton lining to the verso. The piece is from the collection of Dr. Ben and Dr. Alice Baker, Chinese missionaries from 1910-1930s.
