19th-Century English Mahogany Lap Desk on Stand
Item Details
An antique, circa mid-19th century, portable mahogany and brass-trimmed lap desk on stand. The writing desk chest has a hinged top, trimmed with brass edging and string inlay, with a brass lock on the front. The lid has a brass plate engraved with a personal message to a recipient, ‘Presented to Mr. - On The Occasion of his leaving Glasgow. 1 Nov’r 1866’. The lid opens to reveal a slanted, leather topped writing surface and several small compartments, two of which hold glass ink bottles with brass caps, and a storage area underneath the writing surface has one small drawer. The lock mechanism is engraved with ‘Bramah – London’, and the writing desk rests on a later stand with straight, square legs with an H stretcher.
