Charles S. Kaelin Original Pastel Landscape Drawing on Paper

Item Details

An original pastel drawing on gray-toned paper by well-listed Cincinnati-based artist Charles Salis Kaelin (Ohio/Massachusetts; 1858 – 1928). Skillfully executed, this Impressionist image depicts the interior of a thickly wooded area during late fall or winter. The terrain is covered with thin, bare birch trees, the central focus being a creek snaking across the space, with boulders glittering with moisture in the bright sunlight filtering through. This work is mounted behind a linen liner with a gilt fillet, under glass in a wood frame with cast molding and a distressed gold leaf finish.

Charles Salis Kaelin was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he studied at the famed McMiken School of Design with Thomas Noble and John Twachtman before moving to NY where he attended the Art Students League of New York. In the 1890’s Kaelin returned to Cincinnati and exhibited regularly at the Cincinnati Art Museum, then at the encouragement of his friend Frank Duveneck he visited Massachusetts and was completely taken by the rugged coastline and the natural light. He is known for developing a distinctive Impressionistic “Divisionist” technique of painting that was referred to as “daring” by his contemporaries. Kaelin’s work can be found in prestigious private collections as well as museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cincinnati Art Museum and The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
