Wallace Nutting Hand-Colored Photograph "Honeymoon Drive"

Item Details

A hand-colored photograph on paper titled Honeymoon Drive by photographer Wallace Nutting (American; 1861–1941). It depicts a serene dirt road traveling through a tunnel of flowering trees. The work is signed in the photo to the lower left and dated 1919, as well as signed by hand to the lower right and titled to the lower left. It is presented behind a mat and glass in a wood frame with string to the verso for hanging.

Primarily based in New England, Wallace Nutting turned to photography after his poor health forced him to retire from his work as a Congregational minister. He is mostly known for his platinotypes of New England landscapes, architecture, and residential interiors referred to as “Colonials”, which featured women posed in traditional 18th-century feminine roles. In 1904, he founded the Wallace Nutting Art Prints Studio, affectionately nicknamed “Nuttinghame”, and employed nearly 200 colorists, often women, who hand-painted and tinted his photographs, as may have been the case for this particular work.
