Antique Scottish Regency Mahogany Tall Case Clock by Pringle of Denny
Item Details
An antique Scottish Regency mahogany tall case clock by Pringle of Denny, early 19th century. The flame-veneered case features a round, drum-head bonnet with a conforming, glass door opening to a white-painted dial before a brass, time-and-strike movement. The dial has black, Roman numeral markers surrounding two stacked subdials as well as a central inscription reading ‘Pringle / Denny’. The rectangular waist is applied with columnar moldings flanking a convex door surmounted by an ogee arch with an urn finial. The clock rises on a crossbanded, box-form base ending in turned feet. It comes with a pendulum, two weights, and a winding crank.
There were a handful of Scottish clockmakers with the last name ‘Pringle’ working near Denny (approximately forty-five kilometers northwest of Edinburgh) during the early 19th century; however, the most likely makers include Adam Pringle (active 1794-1820), George Pringle (active 1793-1822) later becoming George Pringle and Son in 1822, Thomas Pringle (active 1830-1836), and William Pringle (active 1825-1836).
