Herman Hoefl 19th Century Crayon Portrait

Item Details

Wooden Frame

A late-19th century hand-accented crayon portrait on paper by an artist named Herman Hoefl. The drawing depicts a woman wearing a high-collared dress with lace decorations. Crayon portraits were created by adding accents by hand, usually using pastels, watercolors, or charcoal, to accent and bring life to an antique black and white portrait photograph. This one is accented primarily with charcoal. It is signed and dated both Dec. 11, 1892 and Dec. 13, 1895 to the lower left. The portrait is presented behind non-glare museum glass in an antique wooden frame with cast surface embellishments, gold tone finish, and a hanging wire. A picture light is attached to the frame’s upper edge.

Condition
