An oil painting on canvas by an anonymous artist, created as a copy of a painting made after Thomas Gainsborough’s late 18th-century portrait titled Portrait of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. The piece depicts a female figure with long brown hair wearing a blue dress and large feathered hat, holding a bloomed rose in one hand and a single bud in the other. The unsigned work is inscribed ‘Duchess Devonshire, London’ to the canvas verso by an unknown hand. It is presented without glass in a wooden frame with ornate foliate gesso embellishments and gold tone finish, fitted with hanging wire to the verso.

Condition

- to fair; craquelure and discoloration to composition; notable signs of in-painting, particularly to the face; wear to frame, with scratches to finish and chips and cracks to gesso; no backing paper present.
