A Makonde style wood carving of a Shetani figure from East Africa. Shetani are generally malevolent spirits depicted as physically distorted forms with animal and human elements. This piece presents a male figure with skewed proportions including a wide grin with blunt teeth, rabbit-ear protrusions from the head and a snake-like phallus. The work is presented on a slice of wood with felt to the underside. There are no apparent maker’s marks.

- surface abrasions on back of head, left shoulder, and edges of base.
