An oil portrait on canvas of a young boy by listed Ohio-based artist William Sommer (American, 1867 – 1949). Portrayed in a post-impressionistic manner with patches of vibrant colors and large brushstrokes, this work features a frontal half-body portrait of a young boy wearing overalls. No signature was found on the work. It is presented in a wood frame with a medium brown finish. This work is attributed to artist William Sommer per the consignor; the work was gifted to the original owner from the artist; it was later purchased by the consignor.

Born in Michigan, William Sommer is regarded as a key artist who pioneered European modernism in northern Ohio. He is known for his colorful expressionistic portraits, still lifes, and genre scenes, and was a founder of the Kokoon Club in Cleveland. His work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Museum of American Art, among others.

- to fair; craquelure throughout painting; some tears present in canvas along lower edge; reinforced puncture in right central area of canvas with patch to verso; some rubbing and paint loss along painting edges; some wear in frame includes scratches, stains, and finish loss scattered throughout; canvas is loose in frame and needs securing.
