A watercolor painting which is attributed to American-born artist James Drummond Herbert (1896-1970). This painting depicts the portrait of a female figure wearing upperclass attire and in a formal pose. She is rendered with vibrant hues and expressive brushstrokes. This piece appears to be without an artist signature. It is presented in unframed, but in a mat. An artist biography is present to the verso.
James Drummond Herbert was born in New York City and is known for his watercolor and mixed media paintings, sculptures, and illustrations of dance and theater scenes. He studied at Columbia University and attended the Art Students League in the 1920s and later went to Paris to continue his studies. He retired in Rhode Island where he taught at the Rhode Island School of Design for approximately twenty years. His versatile body of work has been exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute, National Academy of Design, Society of Illustrators, Newport Art Museum, and the Providence Art Club. He is also listed in Who’s Who in American Art and the American Art Annual.
