An oil painting on canvas of a courtyard scene by well-listed American artist Edgar Yaeger (1904-1997), created in 1941. Portrayed in a post-impressionistic manner with patches of vibrant colors and flattened forms, this work features a circular fountain in the middle of a courtyard with a building occupying the background. The painting is signed and dated to the lower right. It is presented in a purple painted carved wood frame.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Edgar Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
