A hand-knotted Persian Hamadan area rug. This wool rug features a medallion and corners design in a palette of cream, ruby, deep midnight blue/black, camel and sapphire. It begins with a small diamond medallion grounded in cream, with palmette pendants at top and bottom. The medallion rests on a ruby field, which features a dense herati pattern incorporating palmettes, flowers, leaves and diamonds, elements that continue in the spandrels and medallion. Framing the field are three narrow borders, including a stylized leaf-and-blossom meander pattern over blue/black, a running water pattern over ruby and a chain of florets over camel. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with cotton warp fringe. A label on the reverse reads ‘Made in Iran.’
