Item Details
A vintage hand-knotted Persian Kashan Ghotbi room size rug, circa 1940s in 100% wool. It begins with a diamond shaped medallion to the center of a rich scarlet red field. It offers an intensely ornate design including foliate and floral motifs, with scrolling, purling vinework boasting large shah abbasi rendered in a palette of ivory, indigo, merigold, olive, azure and cinnamon. Spandrels are layered using indigo, ivory and azure grounds. Framing the rug are multiple floral meander borders with an inscription to the most outer border within a cartouche. It’s main border features an eloquent display of a herati pattern. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing with short ivory cotton fringe at either end. It is labeled with a tag to the verso indicating country of origin.
