Hand-Knotted Persian Area Rug with Inscription
Item Details
A large hand-knotted Persian area rug. This wool rug features a vase design in a bright palette of cherry, sapphire, midnight blue, periwinkle, caramel and cream. It begins with an ogival pendant medallion filled with crisply rendered boteh, lancet leaves, palmettes and flowers. Grounded in sapphire, the medallion rests on a ruby field, which is populated with similarly crisp sprays of flowers and leaves. Spandrels contain vases, palmettes and boteh over sapphire. The field is framed by eight borders, including a herati main border featuring palmettes and lancet leaves over midnight blue. There is an inscription in one of the borders, possibly naming the manufacturer. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with cotton warp fringe. A label on the reverse reads ‘Made in Iran.’
