Peter Max Limited Edition Seriolithograph "Umbrella Man with a Cane"

Item Details

A limited edition seriolithograph on paper Umbrella Man with a Cane by well-listed and renowned German-American Pop artist Peter Max (born 1937). This print depicts a figure loosely rendered with broad brushstrokes in violet, cerulean, and magenta, holding an umbrella against a red, yellow, and blue background. This piece is signed to the lower right and numbered 489/500 to the lower left. The print is presented in a black fabric covered mat with a gold liner, beneath glass, and in a beveled gold-tone frame. The verso of this piece is equipped to hang.

Max received his formal art education in the 1950s at the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan, where he studied anatomy, figure drawing and composition under the tutelage of Frank J. Reilly. Max began his career in illustration and graphic arts by creating collage-based works using elements taken from antique photographs. His interest in astronomy led to his self-described “Cosmic ’60s” period, where his art became a symbol of the counterculture with its flamboyant use of bright rainbow colors and psychedelic images.
