Carol J. Matthews Original Marker Drawing on Paper of Figures
Item Details
An original marker drawing on paper by American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). The black and white drawing features a self-portrait of the artist to the left side, surrounded by symbols from her created visual vocabulary. The eye shape directly next to her face most likely represents ‘Johnny’ her tomboy alter ego while the large face to the right side portrays the aliens that talked to her. More faces swirl about the composition. The work is unsigned and is marked to the verso with a stamp from the artist’s estate. It is presented unframed, on a foam core backing wrapped in plastic. A printed piece explaining Mathew’s symbolism is attached to the verso.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows: “having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind.” After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. For more information about the artist visit the link in Additional Information.
