A mixed media painting on paper by American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). This abstract painting is composed of spontaneous shapes of vibrant color overlaid with thin layers of collaged tissue paper, creating a complex layered composition. The work is unsigned and is marked to the verso with a stamp from the estate of the artist. It is presented behind a white mat, wrapped in plastic.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows: “having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind.” After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil.
