Eugene Thurston Southwest "El Capitan" Oil Painting
Item Details
An original acrylic Texan landscape painting on canvas, titled ‘Signal Peak-El Capitan’, by listed artist Eugene Thurston (Texas, 1896 – 1993). A prominent early Texas artist and muralist who lived in El Paso, Eugene Thurston was also a teacher and lecturer. For his landscapes, much of his subject matter came from the area surrounding his home. He was a prolific painter, continuing into his 80s, and worked in oil, watercolor, and ink and depicted desert and mountain scenes and also Mexican villages. Soft earthy colors and a flat application of paint distinguish this beautiful landscape of the Texas High Plains. The piece depicts a rugged road winding up to the commanding formation, Signal Peak, with sun-washed rocks and desert vegetation. Housed in a gilded wood frame with linen liner.
