Wallace Nutting Hand-Colored Photograph of Cherry Blossoms
Item Details
An early 20th-century hand-colored photographic print on paper by listed New England photographer Wallace Nutting (American; 1861 – 1941). The piece depicts a country road bordered with green grass, a stone wall and flowering cherry blossom trees with pink blooms. The work is signed by hand to the backing paper, to the lower right of the photograph. It is presented under glass in a vintage wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso.
Primarily based in New England, Wallace Nutting turned to photography after his poor health forced him to retire from his work as a Congregational minister. He is mostly known for his platinotypes of New England landscapes, architecture, and residential interiors referred to as “Colonials”, which featured women posed in traditional 18th-century feminine roles. In 1904, he founded the Wallace Nutting Art Prints Studio, affectionately nicknamed “Nuttinghame”, and employed nearly 200 colorists, often women, who hand-painted and tinted his photographs, as may have been the case for this particular work.
