1921 and 1926 Editions of "First Families of the Southwest"

An early 20th century edition of _First Families of the Southwest _ edited by J.F.H. (John Frederick Huckel), published by Fred Harvey, Kansas City. It is presumed to be an early publication, (circa 1913) as there is no date and no indiction of additional printings. The cover is tan paper covered boards and features an illustration plate of a native American playing a flute with terracotta lettering and a brown cloth spine. The book is unpaginated and illustrated with full page color illustrations on every facing page with explanatory text opposite, totaling thirty-two full page, full color plates. Three color photographs of blankets, pottery, and an altar room are also present. Thirteen of the illustration are by an unnamed artist, three pieces by J. Allen St. John, five are by Taos Society of Artists founding member O. E. Berninghaus, two are by F. P. Sauerwein (cover ‘Flute Player’ painting), and a painting each by Chas Craig, W. E. Rollins, C. Cassidy Davis, Ferdinand Burgdorff, and E. Irving Couse. The front endpaper has a pencil inscription, ‘Christmas 1921’. A later third edition, 1926, is included in the lot. It has a soft black paper cover with different illustration and is dated, ‘Third Edition 1926’.

Consistent with age and wear. There is some wear on the ends and corner of the cover boards.
