An early 20th century Fang culture (Gabon, Africa) guardian head or Nlo Bieri, carved from wood with metal embellishment at the prominent forehead and a dark patina. The heart shaped face with stylized features and metal disc eyes has a crested coiffure and is elevated on a cylindrical neck. The anthropomorphic effigies are honored and consulted by family members as they guard relic boxes containing the remains and skulls of ancestors. The sculpture is presented elevated on a wooden cylindrical post and gray marble base. Please note a similar guardian head is offered as #18DCC143-999.
