Circa 1930 Carved African Ekoi Painted and Carved Face Mask
Item Details
Unsigned
A circa 1930 West African (Cameroon) Ekoi painted and carved wooden face mask pierced through the eyes. The face mask is painted entirely with exaggerated facial features, a hairstyle with ‘top knot’ and long hair at the ears (sideburns). Perforations at the outer edge suggest natural fibers would have been further embellishment. The mask is presented elevated on a metal stand.
Condition
- natural wear to the painted finish, one eye was chipped away larger than the other however the painted surface suggests the damage occurred long ago. There is also a divet in the chin area which appears to be a natural formation in the wood used.
Dimensions
- measurements refer to the mask alone, presented on the stand it is 13.00" tall
