A chromolithograph of Martha Washington, after an oil on canvas portrait by Francis Meade (b. 1814), produced by M. Hallett & Co. This portrait depicts an image of Martha in her senior years, she sits facing right and looks toward the artist. She wears a gauzy bonnet with long tails, tied in a bow at her neck, which cascades down the front of her blue dress. The portrait is seen through an oval window surrounded by a border, part of the plate image, depicting garland and wreaths in the upper corners and Americana imagery including an eagle holding an ‘E Pluribus Unum’ banner aside a flag motif shield at the bottom. A faint name is written below the left corner of the banner. Text to the lower left corner printed in plate reads ‘Published By M. Mallett & Co. Portland Maine’ , large block printed letters at the center read ‘MARTHA WASHINGTON’, and printed text to the lower right corner reads ‘Copyright M. Hallett & Co. 1880.’ The artwork is presented under glass, with no mat, in a dark stained wooden frame. Wired to hang.
