Antique Hand-Knotted Wool Double-Niche Prayer Rug
Item Details
An antique hand-knotted central Asian double-niche prayer rug. This wool rug is rendered in a palette of cream, celadon, cerulean, aqua, peach, taupe, gray and mocha. It features mirrored stepped mihrabs with corbelled arches and a vertical row of five mosque chandeliers over a cream-colored lozenge. Flanking the lamps are two trees of life. Spandrels are grounded in peach, featuring trefoil boteh arrangements. Framing the field is a wide border in taupe, featuring a repeating pattern of mihrab motifs grounded in cerulean. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at one end with a mesh skirt and incidental wool warp fringe, while the other end finishes with unbound wool warp fringe. Unlabeled.
