Greco-European Style Sphinx Motif Vanity Box

Item Details

A Greco-European style sphinx motif vanity box. Presented is a rectangular bronze tone box featuring a rectangular copper inlay depicting a Greco-European style sphinx; she holds her head high, wears a coiffed bun hairstyle showing off pearl type earrings, and is ample breasted – details associated with the European Mannerist style, and has wings reminiscent of Greek sphinx. She stands on an acanthus branch, one paw resting on a scrolled end. The bronze tone box is covered entirely with ornate detailing in horizontal bands featuring beaded, diamond-lattice, egg-and-dart, chain, stepped, and fan motifs. It stands on small round feet each accented with a beaded band. Inside the box is lined with rosewood, which also covers the underside. No maker’s marks noticed. This box is attributed by the seller to be from ‘France or England, circa 1850’.
