Soyer was a social realist painter known for his depictions of New York life. As a WPA painter, Soyer famously depicted the working class lives affected by the Great Depression. Throughout the 1940s and 1960s, the artist taught art in a variety of institutions in the greater New York area including the Brooklyn Museum School and the Art Students League. Today, Soyer’s works can be found in a variety of public and private collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Dallas Museum of Art.

- scuffing and scratching to the finish on the frame; discoloration to the canvas verso; scratching and scuffing to the painting, concentrated in the lower left and lower right corners; areas of overpainting to the figure’s face.
