A 20th-century Mesoamerican-inspired ceramic head depicting K’inich Janaab’ Pakal (603 – 683), ruler of Palenque in Maya. The sculptural piece is styled after pre-Columbian stucco works and depictions found in Mexico. It is rendered in variegated brown tones, with incised details to the figure’s face, hair and headdress. The piece rests on a stepped wooden base. No signatures or maker’s marks were found; a tag to the base reads ‘Terra Cotta Head, Mayan King Pakal, Mexico, circa 1950’ written by an unknown hand.
Condition
- scuffs, scratches, small cracks and discoloration to sculpture; round hole present to verso; cracks, wear and abrasions to wooden base.
