An antique carved wood sculpture of a shepherd with a lamb, dated 1870 and signed Hakob Avakyan. The sculpture depicts a young man with a serene facial expression who wears a textured robe while holding a long staff. He stands barefoot beside a recumbent lamb on a rocky base. An Armenian inscription to the verso reads ‘1870 Betkhios (?), Hakob Avakyan’ (or Avakian). Also included is a later, rotating base, the underside of which is marked ‘Weston Bowl Mill / Weston Vermont’.

Condition

- to fair; sculpture with some light shrinkage cracks; staff possibly a replacement; base with some minor scratches; base not original to sculpture.
