Item Details
An antique burl walnut nécessaire de toilette, third quarter 19th century. The veneered case features a rectangular, hinged lid opening to a compartmentalized interior with a removable tray. The underside of the lid is fitted with a conforming mirror, which can be released, via a button behind the hasp, to reveal a leather- and blue velvet-lined letter compartment. There is another release button centering the hinge rail, providing access to a spring-loaded drawer in the front with nine, silk- and velvet-lined compartments. The box is further embellished with inlaid, brass plaques and banners on the lid and front panel.

- scattered, light scratches; lid with a shrinkage crack across the top and sides; front drawer with a few small holes to silk lining in one compartment; other wear as would be expected from age and use; no key or interior implements.
