Item Details

An antique Victorian rosewood sewing box with inlay, mid 19th century. The veneered box is edged by bands of mixed wood inlay. It features a rectangular, hinged lid opening to a bird’s-eye maple interior with a removable, nine-compartment tray. The underside of the lid is inset with a red velvet panel embroidered with flowers and the initials ‘MW’.

- scattered scratches and marks; some small veneer chips/losses along lower edges, mostly at corners; bottom board with an age split; embroidered panel is probably later; retains interior lock mechanism but lid hasp is missing (replaced with a mother-of-pearl strip); front, exterior panel probably had an inset key escutcheon, which is now missing; no key.
