A watercolor painting on paperboard of a woodland landscape by listed American artist Hobart Nichols, Jr. (1869-1962). This work features a small creek waterfall leading into a stream in the foreground, surrounded by autumnal trees and overgrown foliage. The work is signed ‘H.N.’ in graphite to the lower right. It is possibly titled Adirondack Stream as was handwritten on a removed label. The composition is presented without glass with beige matting, housed in a gold-tone wood and gesso frame. The artist’s name and life dates are handwritten to the verso.
Known for his realistic and meticulously rendered landscapes, Hobart Nichols, Jr. studied at the Art Students League in New York and the Academie Julian in Paris. He served as the President of the National Academy of Design for ten years, and remained President Emeritus until his death. His work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery, and the Newark Museum, among others.
