The artist graduated from Belfast Municipal College (North Ireland) and soon after began a technical career as a stained glass craftsman. Carlin emigrated to the United States in the 1930s and settled in New Jersey. For over 30 years, Carlin taught at the New Jersey School of Fine and Industrial Art (Newark).
