A hand-colored, mid-century woodblock showing a squirrel perched in a pine tree and silhouetted against a blue sky. Signed upper right and stamped with artist’s chop mark, ‘’B. Ohno’’ for Bakufu Ohno (1888-1976), a listed artist, and dated 1951. This print bears the Shinagawa printer’s seal as well as the Kyoto-Hanga-In publisher’s seal in both English (lower right margin) and Japanese (lower left margin). A notable Tokyo-based painter and printmaker, Bakufu Ohno studied at the private Western-style painting school Taiheiyogakai Kenkyusho, now known as Taiheiyo Bijutsu Kenkyusho. His work was also frequently featured in the official catalogues of Kyoto-Hanga-In, one of the foremost publishers of Ukiyo-e style woodblock prints in the mid-20th century.
